If you take steroids for a long time, your body can start to get used to the changed hormone levels and having steroids provided. If this happens and you stop taking steroids suddenly, it can lead to a lack of the steroid hormone cortisol within your body. This is known as adrenal crisis, or secondary adrenal insufficiency.
Steroid tablets that are taken for a short period of time are unlikely to cause side effects. Steroids that are injected into muscles and joints may cause some pain and swelling at the site of the injection. A high dose of inhaled steroids can sometimes cause more serious side effects but this is rare.

Raised blood sugar levels
Please ensure they are given plenty of notice to arrange any repeat prescriptions. If you run out of steroids you must inform your GP immediately as you should not stop taking your steroids suddenly. Your GP will have been sent a copy of your discharge summary, including the list of medication you were prescribed on discharge from hospital. They will continue to prescribe all your medication, so please ensure you inform them if you need any repeat prescriptions.
Corticosteroids can decrease the effectiveness of medications used to treat diabetes. If you want to check that your medicines are safe to take with your medication, ask your Pharmacist or GP. It’s sometimes necessary for steroid tablets to be taken for longer periods.
Steroids cause a rise in the level of sugar in your blood, and insulin lowers the level. Taking steroid medication can disrupt this balance and lead to high blood-sugar levels. Usually, this is short-term and the balance is restored once you stop taking steroids.
